This comprehensive 4-hour Firearms Safety Training Course is designed for individuals seeking to apply for the Maryland Handgun Qualification License (HQL). All equipment, including firearms, ammunition, and safety gear, is provided—no prior experience or equipment is necessary.
Course Overview
Our Maryland HQL Course meets and exceeds the state-mandated requirements, delivering a blend of classroom instruction and hands-on training. You’ll gain a thorough understanding of Maryland firearm laws, safe handgun operation, and practical skills through a guided “live fire” demonstration. This course is perfect for beginners and those looking to ensure compliance with Maryland’s HQL application process.
What You’ll Learn
This course covers the following state-required curriculum, along with additional topics to enhance your knowledge and confidence:​

1. State Firearm Law  
   1. Overview of Maryland firearm laws and regulations.  
   2. What qualifies as a regulated firearm and the legal process for purchasing or transferring one.  
   3. Where you are allowed to carry or transport a firearm in Maryland.  
   4. When a carry permit is required and who is prohibited from possessing firearms.  
   5. Laws regarding minors, permissible levels of force, and the use of deadly force.  
   6. Explanation of the HQL: what it is, what it isn’t, and how it differs from the Wear and Carry Permit.  
   7. The handgun purchase process, including the mandatory waiting period.
2. Home Firearm Safety  
   • Best practices for handgun and firearm safety in the home.  
   • How to prevent unauthorized access, especially by minors.  
   • Proper methods for locking and storing firearms, including the use of safety devices like secure lock boxes.
3. Handgun Mechanisms and Operation  
   • Detailed overview of how handguns work, including the differences between revolvers and semi-automatic pistols.  
   • Safe handling, cleaning, and maintenance techniques.  
   • Step-by-step instruction on loading and unloading ammunition.  
   • Introduction to semi-automatic pistol function, anatomy, and operation.
4. Operation and Handling Demonstration  
   • Hands-on orientation to demonstrate safe operation and handling of a firearm.  
   • Includes a “live fire” component where you’ll safely discharge a handgun under expert supervision.  
   • Firing distance will not exceed 15 yards, per state guidelines.  
   • Focus on marksmanship fundamentals, manipulation, and movement techniques.
